Chocolate Obsession: Filled Chocolates

It’s true, there is more to Caputo’s than cheese and meat. There is chocolate. Not just any chocolate, mind you, fine chocolate reigns supreme here and we are proud of the selection Matt has painstakingly chosen over the years.

Hopefully, some of you have been to Matt’s famous- or infamous, depending on who you speak to- Intro to Fine Chocolate. It is truly life-altering. The class befuddles, then amazes, then changes your life. Forget everything you know about chocolate, the real deal lies on the shelves here at Caputo’s.

Of the many extraordinary brands we carry, Amedei is easily one of our top sellers. Based in Pisa, Italy, Amedei has won numerous awards and is arguably the best fine chocolate producer in the world. Their beans are sourced from all over the world, each bar is produced by hand, and each bar is of the highest quality. With such high regard, it’s no surprise Amedei’s filled chocolate are just as good as their single origin bars.

Amedei’s filled chocolates are given just a much TLC as their bars. The shell is created in the same manner as their bars and the fillings are all made in house as well. Amedei’s belief is that only the highest quality ingredients will suffice. With only the best ingredients come the best filled chocolates, of course. And who would want anything else (cough, anniversary gift, cough).

These make excellent gifts, that is, if you can part with these boxes once they come home with you. The flavors are temptation enough to reconsider giving it away and stashing it somewhere for yourself: hazelnut cream, walnut and orange, wine flower and grappa, and macaroon are among my favorites. Yes, I was the child that took a bite out of each chocolate and only ate my favorites.

The proof is in the pudding…or underneath a thin layer of chocolate in this case. You can buy them from our online store here or tease yourself into coming down to the store to get a good look at them in person. You will not be disappointed; however, you may be addicted for life (insert the despised hashtag #sorrynotsorry).

Enjoy, and feel free to share!

The Amano Madagascar is my favorite beause of its wonderfully rich, mildly fruity flavor and that it doesn’t have the bitter aftertaste of the Amedei 9.

I was lucky enough to hear the chocolate maker from Amano speak during one of the classes. I was so blown away by the flavor of his chocolates that I bought a bunch of bars and sent them to my aunt in Spain who is a chocolate junkie. On another note, the bacon chocolate bar was interesting….

My favorite bar has got to me the Amedei 9 bar. The mix of flavors is fantastic. Then I’d have to put the madagascar bars in second with the unique flavoring they give.

My favorite so far is the Amano Ocumare milk chocolate bar. I usually tend to favor milk chocolate over dark chocolate. I love Caputo’s for offering such a wonderful selection of chocolate – not to mention fabulous cheeses and so many other delectable items! I also love that the 9th & 9th location now has an espresso machine. I was lucky to be there for one of the very first cappuccinos. Yum!!

There are so many to choose from this is such a hard call. I was lucky enough to get to taste several bars there and the one that stood out the most was Amedei Madagascar Cru. It was such a delicious chocolate with a deep complexity. Had subtle hints of both fruit and nuts. I savored the delicious bite and my mouth is watering right now just thinking about it.
But truly there is a delicious chocolate for any palette at Caputos!

I adore fine chocolate, and while I haven’t tried Amadei (yet!) I do have a favorite that I pick up that is manufactured by Fresco chocolates. I have a birthday in a week, I think I am going to send my hubbers a link to this post ;o)

      Becky,
Rob the founder and chocolate maker at Fresco will be at Caputo’s for an event on August 13th. Must be a Utah Chocolate Society member though. This group is not technically affiliated with Caputo’s, but we love them and can put you in touch.

By the way, Caputos is awesome. We moved here from Seattle a couple years ago and you were the first place we found that reminded of places in Seattle. A little piece of home. ( except for being able to buy bottles of wine from you. That would be the icing on the lovely cake.)

I went to the chocolate class and took home samples. Of them my favorites were
1- Jivarar Pecan by Valrhona (yes I still prefer milk chocolate but I appreciate nuanced dark chocolate more and recognize its health benefits).
2- Sur del Lago by Domori
    3- Zotter Blutorange
I want to try filled chocolate next! I don’t recall hearing about it at the class but it sounds so good. Someone asked me if I’ve ever had alcohol and I responded, only in chocolate. I actually liked the one with whiskey in it too.

I like too many kinds of chocolate!!! I am partial to milk chocolate more than dark. I’m sure that I would love to try the chocolates (Amadei) that you carry! I’ve never tried this variety before. A personal favorite is Toblerone (Swiss).

  81. Shauna Palmer on said:

These are the very best chocolates you can find in SLC. The Napolitan and Madagascar are my favorites. I’d love to try them all…and I will one delicious bar at a time. I have given as business gifts and they are divine!

My favorite chocolate is domori sambriano or Amano Dos Rios. Although I am only putting an absolute favorite because I have to. There are so many bars I truly enjoy. Domori Porcelana is wonderful along with Amadei Chuao. I really like the finer moonstruck series and though I am not a big fan of milk, there’s has surprising nuance.

Well, it took long enough to figure this out! I haven’t had any chocolate for days and those pictures put a huge hurt on my lifeless brain! I haven’t been exposed to any really nice chocolate for a long time, so, now that I know what Caputos is up to I will make the effort to get to town and try some-love dark, but it all looks good. Good luck, everyone!

  88. Kristy Eilertson on said:

My favorite would be Toscano Brown because i love milk chocolate! Its hard to find a good quality milk chocolate in Utah that is actually made from Cacao beans. I love it because its very rich and creamy, melts in your mouth but still has that complex chocolate flavor. Amedei is by far the best chocolate I’ve tried and Caputo’s has the largest selection. I love that they let you sample the various types of chocolate they sell to help you decide what to buy!

  89. John Robertson on said:

Favorite chocolate bars: For snacking on over time i really enjoy valrhona’s jivari dark milk (40%). You can buy it as a bar, but I really like when we get a bag of the calet’s from caputos. They are the m&m’s of fine chocolate, as you can keep on eating “just one more” indefinitely (and because buying the calets is more economical – a major selling point). And I was so thrilled to try the Amedei giandujia bar that I noticed on the shelves recently. It was fantastic. Current favorite actual bar is probably that giandujia bar.

  90. Weston Saunders on said:

Amedei No. 9… is there really anything else to say here? If there is it might be the CRU bars. There is something special and original about them that is like no other chocolate.

I love the organic chocolove bars, it’s hard to find good dark chocolate that doesn’t have soy in it.

    • admin. on said:

Thanks for your comment Nichole! It’s very easy to find chocolate without soy here in our store. We carry at least 100 dark chocolate bars that do not contain any soy products.
It’s also worth mentioning we’ve been told the chocolate used by Chocolove is actually made by Callebaut, the world’s largest chocolate producer. Callebaut produces roughly 57% of the world’s chocolate.

my favorite amadei bar, despite my passion for dark chocolate, is the nocciole. not only is it the best, by far, hazelnut chocolate combo i’ve ever had, but it takes me right back to my childhood: sitting in my grandma’s backyard, cracking hazelnuts open on a small stone bench and devouring them with my little brother. every time i stop at caputo’s, i always grab a bar or two!

  97. Matthew Hamby on said:

Since the blog post is about Amadei, I’d have to say that their Toscano Black is almost impossible to beat. However, if I got to choose from anything, I’d have to go with the Domori Javablond. Wow. Tastes like chocolate-covered fruit.
