It’s true, there is more to Caputo’s than cheese and meat. There is chocolate. Not just any chocolate, mind you, fine chocolate reigns supreme here and we are proud of the selection Matt has painstakingly chosen over the years.
Hopefully, some of you have been to Matt’s famous- or infamous, depending on who you speak to- Intro to Fine Chocolate. It is truly life-altering. The class befuddles, then amazes, then changes your life. Forget everything you know about chocolate, the real deal lies on the shelves here at Caputo’s.
Of the many extraordinary brands we carry, Amedei is easily one of our top sellers. Based in Pisa, Italy, Amedei has won numerous awards and is arguably the best fine chocolate producer in the world. Their beans are sourced from all over the world, each bar is produced by hand, and each bar is of the highest quality. With such high regard, it’s no surprise Amedei’s filled chocolate are just as good as their single origin bars.
Amedei’s filled chocolates are given just a much TLC as their bars. The shell is created in the same manner as their bars and the fillings are all made in house as well. Amedei’s belief is that only the highest quality ingredients will suffice. With only the best ingredients come the best filled chocolates, of course. And who would want anything else (cough, anniversary gift, cough).
These make excellent gifts, that is, if you can part with these boxes once they come home with you. The flavors are temptation enough to reconsider giving it away and stashing it somewhere for yourself: hazelnut cream, walnut and orange, wine flower and grappa, and macaroon are among my favorites. Yes, I was the child that took a bite out of each chocolate and only ate my favorites.
The proof is in the pudding…or underneath a thin layer of chocolate in this case. You can buy them from our online store here or tease yourself into coming down to the store to get a good look at them in person. You will not be disappointed; however, you may be addicted for life (insert the despised hashtag #sorrynotsorry).
Enjoy, and feel free to share!
Adri

Gotta go with Amedei No. 9 as the king of the chocolate bars!
The Amano Madagascar is my favorite beause of its wonderfully rich, mildly fruity flavor and that it doesn’t have the bitter aftertaste of the Amedei 9.
Congratulations, David! You’ve been randomly selected as one of our four winners! Email me at: adri @ caputosdeli dot com to claim your box of Amedei pralines.
So good
I’m a big fan of the Taza Mexicano Cinnamon disc.
Hmmm, favorite chocolate bar. That’s a tough one! I haven’t tried any Amedei’s yet but I have a feeling I’ll love it! I really like come of the chocolate bars from Madecasse I’ve tried.
I’m going to have to go with the Amedei Chuao. I loved going to your beginners chocolate class. I learned so much in a few hours. Thanks for the chance to win!
I was lucky enough to hear the chocolate maker from Amano speak during one of the classes. I was so blown away by the flavor of his chocolates that I bought a bunch of bars and sent them to my aunt in Spain who is a chocolate junkie. On another note, the bacon chocolate bar was interesting….
My favorite bar has got to me the Amedei 9 bar. The mix of flavors is fantastic. Then I’d have to put the madagascar bars in second with the unique flavoring they give.
Have never tried them would love to win!
I don’t think I can pick a favorite I just love chocolate.
My favorite so far is the Amano Ocumare milk chocolate bar. I usually tend to favor milk chocolate over dark chocolate. I love Caputo’s for offering such a wonderful selection of chocolate – not to mention fabulous cheeses and so many other delectable items! I also love that the 9th & 9th location now has an espresso machine. I was lucky to be there for one of the very first cappuccinos. Yum!!
I have never actually had a chocolate bar, but looking at your website, the
Amedei Toscano Brown looks yummy!
Impossible to pick a favorite especially since there are so many more to try.
Haven’t tried these YET but anything with coffee/espresso is good.
I haven’t tasted any of the Amadei chocolate bars but I am a HUGE fan of chocolate (even more so expected a little one in a few months). I would love to try this chocolate!
I’ve never tried them, but I’d sure love to. They sound divine!
My favorite chocolate bar is the Amano Morobe bar. MMMMMM.
Favorite chocolate bar? The Black Currant Lindt
My favorite is Amadei Venezuela.
There are so many to choose from this is such a hard call. I was lucky enough to get to taste several bars there and the one that stood out the most was Amedei Madagascar Cru. It was such a delicious chocolate with a deep complexity. Had subtle hints of both fruit and nuts. I savored the delicious bite and my mouth is watering right now just thinking about it.
But truly there is a delicious chocolate for any palette at Caputos!
Too right Mike. Thanks a lot.
I can’t really pin my favorite to just one. I am torn between many, I do however favor the fruitier flavored chocolates, mostly because of the complexity of flavors that explode as they melt in my mouth.
I think the Amedei Toscano Black 70% is yum-MEE!
I’d have to say the Madagascar is my favorite! I love nibbling on it with a nice bottle of red wine.
The Deliziosos (hazelnut creams) are my favorites. So good! Perfect amount of creaminess.
Amedei Toscano Brown would be my favorite!
I’ve not tried any of them yet but haven’t met a chocolate I don’t like – especially if there is dark chocolate involved!
I adore fine chocolate, and while I haven’t tried Amadei (yet!) I do have a favorite that I pick up that is manufactured by Fresco chocolates. I have a birthday in a week, I think I am going to send my hubbers a link to this post ;o)
Becky,
Rob the founder and chocolate maker at Fresco will be at Caputo’s for an event on August 13th. Must be a Utah Chocolate Society member though. This group is not technically affiliated with Caputo’s, but we love them and can put you in touch.
Caputo’s
Thanks for the date, I will check my calendar!
Someone gave me a little box of these lovely chocolates as a gift once. Soooo good.
By the way, Caputos is awesome. We moved here from Seattle a couple years ago and you were the first place we found that reminded of places in Seattle. A little piece of home. ( except for being able to buy bottles of wine from you. That would be the icing on the lovely cake.)
Robbin,
We love you.
Caputo’s
Pick one favorite chocolate bar from Caputo’s? I don’t think it can be done. There are so many delicious options to choose from. But if I HAVE to make a choice, I would go with Amedei No. 9. Mmmm, wish I had one right now.
Thank Kim. Good choice.
I would have to go with the Walnut Orange!!
I love chocolate
Mmmm…favorite chocolate bar is a toughie – what’s really hard is to find a chocolate bar I DON’T love! I love Dark Chocolate 70-72% with touch of Sea Salt – can’t remember brand. Or Dark Chocolate Caramel. I’m a bit partial to Amano, as well…
I hardly ever eat candy bars, but when I do, I love a frozen snickers, reminds me of being a kid. Please no judging…lol
Great blog! I truly love how it’s easy on my eyes and also the information are well wrteitn. I am wondering how I can be notified whenever a new post has been made. I have subscribed to your rss feed which should do the trick! Have a nice day!
I like the Amano Chuao; it’s everything that I like; mild, fruity, creamy.
Anything Ritter Sport, but the dark chocolate and marzipan is my favorite
My favorite chocolate bar is a tough question. I think I’ll go with Amano’s Dos Rios. It’s amazingly fruity and from Utah. I love to show my friends not from Utah how great my state is.
Utah is great. Amano is proof!
Depends on many things such as mood, time of year, state of hunger, etc., etc., but if I had to stick with just one for the rest of my life, I don’t think you can beat Amedei Chuao.
Toscano Black 63%
FAVORITE?!? Probably the one that’s in my mouth at the moment. In this case, you made me go to the kitchen and get a square of Francois Pralus Indonesie, 75%
Uncommon yet sophisticated choice. We like you.
I love the Amano milk chocolate bars! The Amedei filled chocolates were a revelation! I had no idea about single source chocolate until I started shopping at Caputo’s.
Amano Chuao was a revelation!!
I went to the chocolate class and took home samples. Of them my favorites were
1- Jivarar Pecan by Valrhona (yes I still prefer milk chocolate but I appreciate nuanced dark chocolate more and recognize its health benefits).
2- Sur del Lago by Domori
3- Zotter Blutorange
I want to try filled chocolate next! I don’t recall hearing about it at the class but it sounds so good. Someone asked me if I’ve ever had alcohol and I responded, only in chocolate. I actually liked the one with whiskey in it too.
-Janet
Hazelnut cream! Yum! I am signing my husband and I up for your class!
Hi Caputos!! I love a good Cadbury bar called a STAR bar from London. Then next any chocolate from Italy sounds good =) hint hint. I am Julie’s sister & I need to come by and get lunch soon…
My favorite bar (of the moment) is Amano’s Montanya.
Thanks for carrying the best selection of artisan bars I’ve ever seen! I recommend Caputo’s to everyone. Thanks, too, for this great giveaway.
AMEDEI has very good product WOW! I Love them all. Going to keep
trying to find the best one time after time. Life is good
Would love to try one of the Praline variety….sound delicious!
Fine chocolate sounds delicious! Would love to try one of the praline variety.
I am a big fan of dark chocolates and like to indulge in local variety V Chocolate, Sees, & Rocky Mountain
I haven’t tried these yet, but my favorite chocolate is made up in Rexburg Idaho, Florences Chocolates. I grew up eating it and I still love it! Would love to try these kinds as well.
Lately I have been loving the Amano Madagascar. My girls tonight had a piece of chocolate from one of your cases, they said the flavor BURST in their mouth. They loved trying one!
Love Caputo’s excellent selection of chocolate! Picking a favorite is impossible, but I always love any bar that includes a hint of fruit or nuts.
I love the Chuao!! So yummy
My favorite is the Amano Ocumare milk. I’m normally a dark chocolate person, but the Ocumare milk is unreal.
Amano Dos Rios is awesome. It’s very smooth and tasty.
Congratulations, Dan! You’ve been randomly selected as one of our four winners! Email me at: adri @ caputosdeli dot com to claim your box of Amedei pralines.
I love chocolate – milk, dark – any kind. It is to hard to pick a favorite. I would love to try these.
Great post! I think I just drooled on my keyboard while reading it. I haven’t tried Amedei but it’s now on my shopping list!
AMEDEI #9 and Madagascar are the finest! Hoping to win!!!
The Amano Morobe, it’s like a smooth whiskey in a chocolate bar.
how can I pick a favorite? they are all delicious!
Such a tough call! I’m going to say Toscano Black, 66%. Some days 60%. Mmmmmmmm.
I’ve not had any of the bars mentioned in this post, but always been a fan of dark chocolates, the darker the better.
I keep going back to the Pralus Madgascar. It’s creamy, tart & one bite satisfies me.
I love the Amano Madagascar. It has such a lively, fruity taste — it turns out that fruity chocolate is what I love.
Amano’s Dos Rios is my fav! I’m a big fan of Amedei’s Porcelana.
The Amedei Chuao 2009 bar was my all time favorite. Currently I hope that the Amedei Porcelana is better than their current Chuao.
I just finished the last of an Amadei Trinidad (single origin) bar. It was outstandingly good. Thanks to Amadei for making such fine chocolate and thanks to Caputo’s for bringing it to Utah!
I love Amano chocolate, too.
Here’s a review of one of my favorites:
http://chocolateratings.wordpress.com/2010/12/13/amano-chocolate-truffles-and-cherry-cordials/
When my husband gave me a box of your chocolatier blue candies I discovered the true meaning of life.
My favorite bar is the Amedei Porcelana! However, any Amedei bar is wonderful!
My main requirement is that it be dark!
Several years ago Matt introduced me to the art of Chocolate Tasting and to the wonder that is Amadei Chuao. My mind, body, and taste-buds will be eternally grateful!!!
Terry, Thanks so much. Great to hear from you.
If it’s dark chocoloate, what could be wrong?
Michael,
Actually a whole lot. Check out our intro to fine chocolate class. Held every month, but the next is Aug. 14th. It will surprise you: http://www.caputosdeli.com/classes/caputos-downtown/
I love Amano Madaadcar chocolate.
My husband loves the Taza discs and I love anything dark!
Tell me about the Taza discs. What are they?
I love chocolate. a few contenders for the favorite. most recently fell for Ritual Chocolate’s Costa Rica 75% –maybe its my current favorite ? also really like the less conventional raw Chocolate Conspiracy Dark Bar.. of course also love Amadei’s Chuao, Amano’s Dos Rios and also Claudio Corallo’s 72 % with sugar crystals … mmmm..
Congratulations, Cait! You’ve been randomly selected as one of our four winners! Email me at: adri @ caputosdeli dot com to claim your box of Amedei pralines.
I love chocolate! My favorite has to be…chocolate turtles…yumm….
The Toscanello and Amor pralines are delectable. I also really love the Amadei No. 9 bar. I love their chocolate because of how pure, yet flavorful it is. THE BEST!
Congratulations, Stefanie! You’ve been randomly selected as one of our four winners! Email me at: adri @ caputosdeli dot com to claim your box of Amedei pralines.
I’m torn. Depending on my mood, my favorite is either Amedei 9 or Amano Guayas. Both so good!
I like too many kinds of chocolate!!! I am partial to milk chocolate more than dark. I’m sure that I would love to try the chocolates (Amadei) that you carry! I’ve never tried this variety before. A personal favorite is Toblerone (Swiss).
These are the very best chocolates you can find in SLC. The Napolitan and Madagascar are my favorites. I’d love to try them all…and I will one delicious bar at a time. I have given as business gifts and they are divine!
My favorite chocolate is domori sambriano or Amano Dos Rios. Although I am only putting an absolute favorite because I have to. There are so many bars I truly enjoy. Domori Porcelana is wonderful along with Amadei Chuao. I really like the finer moonstruck series and though I am not a big fan of milk, there’s has surprising nuance.
Is this where we comment to get free chocolate? My favorite is Amadei Porcelana.
Sure is Tan. Thanks!
Toscano dark 70% for me please. Oh, how I love that taste. Delicious. The white chocolate in darned good, too.
I quite like any chocolate and chili combination. That said, the Amadei Madagascar is quite nice, too.
Being a member of the Chocolate Society, there are so many bars we have tasted, it is like asking a parent which child is a favorite. It’s easier to say which I don’t like!
Well, it took long enough to figure this out! I haven’t had any chocolate for days and those pictures put a huge hurt on my lifeless brain! I haven’t been exposed to any really nice chocolate for a long time, so, now that I know what Caputos is up to I will make the effort to get to town and try some-love dark, but it all looks good. Good luck, everyone!
My favorite would be Toscano Brown because i love milk chocolate! Its hard to find a good quality milk chocolate in Utah that is actually made from Cacao beans. I love it because its very rich and creamy, melts in your mouth but still has that complex chocolate flavor. Amedei is by far the best chocolate I’ve tried and Caputo’s has the largest selection. I love that they let you sample the various types of chocolate they sell to help you decide what to buy!
Favorite chocolate bars: For snacking on over time i really enjoy valrhona’s jivari dark milk (40%). You can buy it as a bar, but I really like when we get a bag of the calet’s from caputos. They are the m&m’s of fine chocolate, as you can keep on eating “just one more” indefinitely (and because buying the calets is more economical – a major selling point). And I was so thrilled to try the Amedei giandujia bar that I noticed on the shelves recently. It was fantastic. Current favorite actual bar is probably that giandujia bar.
Amedei No. 9… is there really anything else to say here? If there is it might be the CRU bars. There is something special and original about them that is like no other chocolate.
I love the organic chocolove bars, it’s hard to find good dark chocolate that doesn’t have soy in it.
Thanks for your comment Nichole! It’s very easy to find chocolate without soy here in our store. We carry at least 100 dark chocolate bars that do not contain any soy products.
It’s also worth mentioning we’ve been told the chocolate used by Chocolove is actually made by Callebaut, the world’s largest chocolate producer. Callebaut produces roughly 57% of the world’s chocolate.
When it comes to Amedei chocolate, I really like Chuao. Amano Madagascar is superb! Matt’s class is awesome!!
Amo il chocolato italiano!
Valrhona! Definitely my favorite. I like to make my own drinking chocolate- much like the ones that you do so well at Caputo’s
-ciao
Okay, now I’m feeling no. 9.
Artisan du Chocolat dark chocolate from Panama is one of my favorites that I have tried so far! I have just recently started trying chocolates and look forward to taking a course to improve my palate.
my favorite amadei bar, despite my passion for dark chocolate, is the nocciole. not only is it the best, by far, hazelnut chocolate combo i’ve ever had, but it takes me right back to my childhood: sitting in my grandma’s backyard, cracking hazelnuts open on a small stone bench and devouring them with my little brother. every time i stop at caputo’s, i always grab a bar or two!
Since the blog post is about Amadei, I’d have to say that their Toscano Black is almost impossible to beat. However, if I got to choose from anything, I’d have to go with the Domori Javablond. Wow. Tastes like chocolate-covered fruit.
